I prefer Rome 2 because of the setting, but Attila is the more original, daring game. It is something of a unique beast - a "survival RTS." Lots of fun. Edit: Worth noting OP, Attila is actually more the "Roman Empire period." Despite the title, Rome 2 is set in the Hellenistic period and really more about Greeks than Romans.
Rome 2 is also better optimised and is now a solid and well polished game. It also includes 2 campaigns with the main game, and a fair choice of factions to choose from off the bat. Attila visually, looks quite a lot better than Rome 2, including better textures, and little things like sun glare off metal surfaces.Rome 2 feels larger, has more unit diversity, better gaming performance, is easier to play and has a stronger online community. Attila can be more difficult from start to finish, has mechancis that slow down steamrolling, has a family tree so you can actually grow attached to your generals/governors and a slighter higher learning curve.
